Spotify Called Justin Bieber a "Latin King" and Twitter Dragged Them SO HARD

REMINDER: He can't even sing "Despacito"'s lyrics live.

When Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee teamed up with Justin Bieber to do a remix of their hit song "Despacito," they probably had no clue the amount of controversy the collab would kick up.

Since the song dropped and shot to number one all across the globe, Justin has flubbed the Spanish lyrics to the song and attempted to recover by tastelessly singing gibberish mixed with words that end with "-ito" like Dorito and burrito. Latinx fans have also voiced concerns about the song's success being attributed to Justin when the song was, in fact, a massive hit long before Justin hopped on the track.

Now, Spotify is getting heat for running a new sponsored Instagram advert calling Justin a "Latin King."

Twitter users were quick to point out that Spotify was another influential corporation giving Justin credit where credit is NOT due.

It's not Justin's fault that Spotify called him (a white, Canadian singer) a Latin king, but it's important to remember Justin is singing lyrics he didn't even write on a remix of a song that was already a smash hit. Calling him a "Latin king" for that is seriously disrespectful to the actual Latin king in this situation, Luis Fonsi.

Spotify has pulled the ad in response to the backlash and released a statement acknowledging their mistake. "We made a creative decision to feature Justin Bieber in our ad because we wanted to celebrate 'Despacito' as key cultural moment when music genres crossover," Spotify told New York Daily News in a statement. "We realized that this could be seen as culturally insensitive so we have pulled those ads."

As much of a non-apology as Spotify's statement is, it's good they acknowledged their mistake. It's about time we stop giving white artists credit for Latin artists' (and other artists of colors')contributions to music NOW.
