Brink - Fun but...

So a while back I went to a preview event that Bethesda did for Brink. Before the event, I had honestly not heard much about this game. Different gaming sites were claiming that the buzz was high for it and it was definitely a title that a lot of people were clamoring for. After the event, I was amazed by the look and style of the game. As I played it for a while, I noticed that not many of the other critics cared for the videos and cutscenes. Instead, they were most interested in the nonstop action and parkour style movement that the game had shown in countless videos.

Now that Brink is out and I've had my chance to play the final version of the game, my feelings are a bit mixed about this title. I was hoping that Splash Damage would revamp the map selection screen to be a bit more graphical and that the story would be fleshed out a bit more as well. Unfortunately, neither happened. Instead, you've got a map selection screen that looks a bit like an operating system program selection screen! Anyways, the story just seems to be so unneeded.

Still, as I play the game, I also noticed that there really isn't too much difference between many of the weapons that are in the same class. You'd think that most of the guns in each class would have attributes that make each one more of an advantage in different situations. Instead, most of the weapons all have one or two weaopns in each class that are simply all around better than the rest. There are a lot of SMGs that seem to be close in performance to assault rifles. Then, there really are only a couple of sniper rifles but neither are really powerful enough for single shot kills. Then, there are no one hit melee kills.

Then there are the different classes. The medic and the engineer seem to be the most useful classes while the soldier and the operative seem to be situation only classes. The operative should have the assassination one hit melee kills as well as something else that allows them to buff their teammates. The soldier needs something else as well that either gives them access to a new set of assault weapons or attachments.

That's another thing too. Though there are weapon attachments it just seems as if there either aren't enough or that too many of them reduce the effectiveness of the gun.

Still, I heard that the first DLC is going to be free and that it is going to add a few class abilities and maps. This will help but I'm hoping a bit more will be added.
