Uncharted 3 Multiplayer: Taking the Beta For A Spin

This is the moment we've been waiting for since we heard the words spoken by Ms. Fischer: "Clowns?" Cut to credits, right? And this is the week we've been waiting for since the Spike VGA's this year when a teaser was shown for Uncharted 3: Drakes Deception. The week is finally here and we've gotten some hands on time with the Uncharted 3 Multiplayer Beta in which we we're able to venture out into the wild with gamers like ourselves and just have at it. But, was the Beta everything we'd expected when all was said and done? Is Uncharted 3 to become the definitive multiplayer experience of the year Naughty Dog have been toting all along to really become the Big Dog?

Can It Compete With the Pros?
Naughty Dog pretty much have their work cut out for them. They've been saying for quite some time now that Uncharted 3 has really stepped it up from Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and they've pulled out all the stops. That Uncharted 3, they hope, will be the definitive multiplayer experience this year on the PlayStation 3. Many have taken that statement a step further saying that Uncharted 3 will be the definitive multiplayer experience on any platform this year. So, when I look I look at what I've been playing, and what I'm going to be playing a little later in the year, I keep asking myself how I'm ever going to get anything done once fall hits. My gaming line-up for multiplayer alone lies with three games. Uncharted 3, Gears of War 3 and Twisted Metal. Trying to fit in singleplayer campaigns for Batman: Arkham City, Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One, Resistance 3, The Last Guardian, Forza 4, replaying the Metal Gear Solid series and I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for Metal Gear Solid: Rising as well as the launch of the PlayStation Vita, its really difficult trying to figure out how I'm going to fit all of that into my gaming schedule with three really big multiplayer games releasing this year. I have to check and make sure, but if Starhawk releases this year, I'm done for and have no clue what I'm going to do. It seems my gaming is definitely going to carry over into 2012 as some games are going to have to fall down the list to be played later on. There's just too many great games with many more I hadn't mentioned. But, with all things being said, I think Uncharted 3 will find itself sitting in the blu-ray drive for a long time and I figure I'll have to hook up another fan to keep cool air pumping through my entertainment stand for quite some time.

With the hands on time that I've had with Uncharted 3 so far, I think is has a really good chance of holding up to play along with the big dogs. I mean, I wouldn't consider myself really a huge multiplayer gamer yet, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is a game that here I am two years later and I'm still getting online and gaming with friends. I have no other multiplayer game in my collection in which I can say the same for. I'm wracking my brain trying to remember my first Uncharted 2 multiplayer beta experience and nothing is really coming to mind. But, if Uncharted 3 is in fact Naughty Dog pulling out all the stops for the Uncharted 3, then Uncharted 3 will definitely be the definitive multiplayer game of the year on PlayStation 3 for me.

Greg Edmoson A Masterful Artist
On to the beta directly, I was actually surprised when the boot up screen appeared. There wasn't any background music. Since then, its kicked in but, it hasn't been the usual Uncharted theme. Its been something much more fitting to this particular game and its style. I'm assuming that Greg Edmonson is once again the head of the musical score and it sounds excellent thus far. I've been really impressed. The musical scores to Uncharted and Metal Gear have always been my absolute favorites as they really just add to the feel and emotion of the games. Edmonson and Williams are phenomenal musical artists and I can't wait to see what Edmonson does with Uncharted 3.

In the period of time I've played the beta, I think I have played two matches in 2D while the rest I threw on the glasses and have played in 3D. I was completely surprised at how it changed the games experience. This was actually my selling point to getting a 3D HDTV. I'd been holding off for so long skeptical of 3D but, when you play this game in 3D, it totally chances how you play and I think its much more beneficial. I'm able to gauge depth much better and, to me, it feels as though its much easier to tell which allies are closer or how much closer I'm getting to nabbing myself a treasure. Also, just the depth and how things pop, I can't figure how people aren't blown away with 3D. You often hear, "Its not the reason for me to rush out and get myself a 3D HDTV" but for me, yes! Most certainly. Its much like playing the 3DS in high definition on a 40" plus size screen and if you move your head, you're not going to lose the 3D experience. I absolutely loved it and its a great new way to play and most certainly has its benefits. The downside is that you do notice a little bit of a resolution drop but nothing so drastic. 3D in Uncharted 3 breathes new life into the game.

As far as gameplay goes, its definitely an experience of its own. It has its bugs to be worked out as I when I first jumped on, it had booted my from the games telling me I had been kicked for "killing my own teammates." But, I hadn't even started the game. Some of my buddies were mentioning that the game would freeze up and their PS3 would reboot. Rebooting is also the result of exiting the beta which makes you wonder what that's doing to the hardware itself. I've also found on several occations, one particular in my most recent run through of Co-op Arena, that when I'm CQC with, what I guess is a pirate of some kind, he just stands there while I'm standing right next to him and swinging frantically like a drunk man missing every shot. So, I have to back-up quickly or roll out of the way and then fire a few shots and then hit him.

One of aspect I found some frustration in was trying to drop from a ledge to catch a foe but, my character would hang onto the ledge and I'd have to push circle to drop and had some difficulties there. It wasn't until much later that I'd learned you could hold down the circle button and you'd keep falling.

The G-MAL isn't the FAL
Finally, was the G-MAL gun. In Uncharted 2 I wasn't a fan of the FAL at first but, its accuracy really grew on me the last playthrough I had with the campaign. Since then, I've used the FAL in multiplayer. When I got my hands on G-MAL, I lost interest in it really quickly. It would zoom in when it really didn't want it to sometimes and it just didn't have that same effect the FAL seemed to have. I target a guy and hit him with several shots and he'd still be standing. Finally, I grew fed up with it and shot him in the crotch and he fell down. I'm still a huge fan of the FAL but, the G-MAL I'm just not feeling it, which is too bad. You mostly find gamers playing the game FPS style, which was a gripe I'd had with Gears of War though, you find gamers taking cover a lot more in Uncharted 3 while Gears is a game that's intended to be played stop and pop. Anyway, you've got everyone using the AK-47 and they come running at you firing as many bullets as they can into you until your dead. Then, if they're still alive, they'll run off, recover health, find the next guy and repeat. I have played with a few snipers though and they were good.

The Airstrip is great! I love the design and can't wait to see more levels like that. I think I'm not the only however in hoping that it isn't Naughty Dogs only stage that's designed that way and that there's a whole lot more to come like it. Its most certainly taken me time to learn how to play it best but, I'm growing better and better at it and those I've played with are loving it equally as much.

The Co-op Arena multiplayer I'm still trying to form an opinion about. I like how they've tried to change up the gameplay of Survival in mixing it up, and perhaps it'll just take some time to learn the stratagy of it, but I honestly have to say that I really like Uncharted 2: Among Thieves Survival Arena much more and I'm hoping they keep that mode around along with the mode they have put together for Uncharted 3. The level design of Uncharted 2 seemed to work much better for me. The change-up is nice, but I prefer the old-school style.

Absolute Best In 3D
The customizing of the game is great as well. I'm an attention to detail type sort of person and having a clip that holds more ammo actually showing in your guns really shows that customization. I love it! Your weapon appearance chances as you want it too. I'd always wished RPG's worked that way back in the day. Character customization, thus far, is definitely pretty bare-bones and I'm pretty excited to see what more they've got. Good deep solid customization for your character gives it that big old boost.

The buddy system is excellent and probably the most popular thing I've heard from others I've played with and against. Its a great addition to the game to taunt your enemies with and gain some more cash while you're at it.

The beta is off to a great start! We can't wait to see what more Naughty Dog has for us. As much as I'm loving the multiplayer, its the singleplayer I'm looking forward to the most, at this point and may not be far off from getting to pick up the dualshock and giving it a test run. The game looks beautiful and I can't see to what singleplayer has waiting for us.

Keep checking back with us as we post more on the Uncharted 3 Multiplayer Beta as well as all things Uncharted, PlayStation and gaming as keep you inside the XZONE right here.
