Calabrese Napoli, dal 1924
The company was founded in Napoli, the undisputed capital of elegance and haute couture, in 1924 by nobleman Don Eugenio Calabrese. Being known as a fond fancy-dresser, he began an artisanal bag manufacturing tradition that his great-grandchildren continue today, after 4 generations. He also had a great sense and huge passion for fashion, more exactly for ties, scarves and cravatte’s.
Over the years, Calabrese has been serving leaders, royalty, artists and sartorial geniuses for almost a whole century. Ranging from the iconic mister Giovanni Agnelli (Fiat) to his epic grand-son Lapo Elkann. Not so weird considering they combine a great history of personal craftsmanship, however always with an updated contemporary style that allows their accessories to fit perfectly into the modern world.
Eugenio's sons Francesco and Gaetano continued the company business and diversified it into making a range of luxury Calabrese Bags. Within the range of fine luggage are to be found a selection of travel bags in both canvas and leather finishes, washbags and also a Calabrese Leather Macbook cover. You'll find them on their website. We're talking scarves now !
The company nowadays has a complete line ranging from those travel bags to ties and scarves, pocket squares, other leather goods, swim- and beachwear, accessories etc…
Ties are proposed as traditional as possible, unlined, with strictly hand-stitched hems. Thanks to their numerous years of research, fabrics are weaved to become Garza silk and special silk linen mixes, which represent a reminiscent image of time.
Knit-ties, which marked several generations of Calabrese ties, are being reinvented with in-fabric applied hand-embroidered designs.
The pocket squares they currently offer are available in different sizes (which is quite important) and several fabrics: all in flirty and colorful patterns. A little bit of summer is never far away with those scarves and pocket squares..
The current men’s scarves come in a range of pastel fantasies, light and delicate colors, giving greater vitality to the summer season, and redefining the concept of elegance and sophistication. For the Calabrese 1924 leather goods, the collection is based on a cotton fabric mixed with leather, which gives the bags a luxurious and informal allure. As stated before, for the leather goods, please do visit their website.
The beachwear line is inspired by the Neapolitan taste of the 70’s, where paisleys and micro patterns are offered in pastel colors like water green, pale pink, and lila.
They have a great way to pursue a policy of high quality, always with specifically designed products, and entirely made in Italy after a careful stylistic research, blending the timeless classic style they are known for with classic contemporary taste.
The diversity of the models Calabrese 1924 created tends to bring a new light to the elegance and luxury of another era. Yet updated so its magic again in our era.
We are not discussing the whole range or collection, but focus on the scarves. Which is what is becoming realy 'trending' in Belgium. Calabrese scarves are to be found in more and more stylish boutiques, and with a reason.
Let's have a look at the detailed close-ups of the following scarf:
Its being delivered when you buy it, in a cilinder. Nice. We at Belgian Dandy love it. It's an original presentation. Why bother ironing it, when people will only wear them when wrinkled... just put some silk-paper between the folds, and put them in a cilinder. We also need to mention that the cilinder is quite high-quality. Nice for the shop owners to decorate their displays, but also nice for the customer. A nicely packaged product mirrors the attention to detail and care for the product.
Looking at the seams, you'll notice that nice hand-finish. After all, you were looking for a high quality scarf. This detail shows you you've found one.
Being a scarf in linen might mean that it is not as soft as the silk version. However, being a little bit affraid it might scruff the neck, it isn't the case. This linen is washed and softened before shipping out. And as a wearer, you'll notice the difference. No frictions or unpleasant feelings at all; Quite pleasant to wear.
This version is a spring/summer edition. Yet cooling down when needed. The fabric is woven losely for aeration, yet strong enough to keep it's shape. Well-thought off Calabrese 1924 !
Although Belgian Dandy prefers bright and bold colours, the combination of the scarf with the striped regimental tie makes an excellent match. Elegant and sofisticated !
